Understanding Immigrant Students' Experiences in Mathematics Classrooms

In our upcoming class on December 4th, we will explore a mathematics lesson through the perspective of an immigrant student. This class aims to demonstrate some of the challenges immigrant students might face, even when they are familiar with the lesson topic. 

What to Expect: 
 During the class, you will be solving a series of math problems specifically designed to highlight potential obstacles and experiences that immigrant students encounter. These problems will focus on key mathematical concepts and require application-based thinking. The activity will help you reflect on the learning process and adapt to different perspectives. 

 Mathematics Concepts Covered:
• Graphing functions 
• Derivatives (simple rules) 
• Piecewise functions 
• Solving systems of equations 
• Application-based word problems 

  Preparation: 
To ensure you are confident with the concepts and can focus on the experience rather than struggling with the mathematics, a review package has been provided. This package includes practice questions on all the key concepts we’ll explore in class. Please take some time to work through these questions to brush up on the material, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve practiced calculus. It’s not mandatory to complete the review, but it’s helpful to have this preparation ahead of time. 

Why this experience is important: 
As future teachers, experiencing the challenges immigrant students face can help you better understand their perspectives and needs. This activity will show how different teaching approaches can either help or hinder their learning. By participating, you’ll explore how to manage your support strategies effectively and reflect on whether these strategies truly address the unique difficulties faced by immigrant students. This understanding will allow you to develop methods to better assist students and foster inclusive learning environments. 

  What You Need to Do: 
 1. Come to class prepared to solve the similar problems and reflect on the experience.
